Fences are used for privacy, security, and ornamentation. A fence should be aesthetically pleasing and enhance the outdoor environment--remember that neighbors will also be looking at it. In addition, the design and material of the fence should look appropriate for the house and landscaping. In a historic community such as Lakewood, wooden fencing and ornamental iron fencing provide the most appealing outdoor screening. Types of wooden fencing include picket, board-on-board, and open lattice.
Deteriorated chain link fence mesh can be made less obvious by replacing it with black or dark green vinyl coated mesh. The fence will then blend better with its surroundings. There are also many flowering annual and perennial vines that will climb on a chain link fence and soften its appearance.
