The Preservation Committee of the Historical Society values the development and history of Lakewood and believes it should be recognized and celebrated. The Historic Lakewood Project is one result of this belief. This program recognizes the significance of Lakewood’s founding and growth and is designed to help Lakewood residents learn about the city’s historic development and storied past and to celebrate it by identifying homes turning one hundred, one hundred ten, one hundred twenty, one hundred thirty, and one hundred forty.

Every year, the Preservation Committee of The Lakewood Historical Society searches the property records of the Cuyahoga County Auditor and identifies houses in Lakewood that will achieve century status during that year. The owners of identified houses are notified by mail. The mailing includes a letter of explanation and a “Certificate of Recognition” officially recognizing their house as a Lakewood Century Home by the Lakewood Historical Society. Home owners are also entitled to order a free window cling to display in a front window identifying the year the house was built.

Houses identified as Lakewood Century Homes are eligible to display a Lakewood Historical Society “Historic Lakewood Plaque” on their house. This bronze plaque is an impressive way to mark a Century Home. The plaques can be purchased from the Lakewood Historical Society.

Century Home owners are also encouraged to celebrate the birthday of their house by participating in the Historical Society’s “Make History in Lakewood: A Century Home Birthday Party.” This program recognizes the historical significance of century homes and suggests ways that this milestone anniversary can be celebrated.
