Curator [Collections Manager]

The Lakewood Historical Society is seeking qualified candidates to fill the position of Curator [Collections Manager]. This is a part-time position requiring an experienced museum professional. The successful candidate will have, as a minimum, 2 years of collections-related experience and a BA/BS degree from an accredited college or university. A master’s degree is preferred and knowledge of the history of the Connecticut Western Reserve is a plus.

Description of Organization

Founded in 1952, the Society is a 501(c)(3) membership organization whose mission is to is to enhance the quality of life in Lakewood by offering educational programs for all ages; providing stewardship of artifacts and buildings; and advocating for our historic community.

The Society operates the Oldest Stone House Museum, an 1834 stone house which interprets the everyday lives of Connecticut Western Reserve settlers from 1834-1870, and the Nicholson House, ca. 1835, as a rental facility. The Society maintains extensive paper and photographic archives and provides a wide variety of educational and other services to the community. In the coming months these collections as well as the offices and reference library will be moving into our new building, the Detroit-Clarence Medical Building.

Position Description

The Curator is responsible to the Executive Director and for the acquisition, care, management, and preservation of the Lakewood Historical Society collections. The Curator furthers the Society’s mission through collections management, exhibit development, and public programming. The Curator conducts relative research in support of these tasks and in support of all Society initiatives.

 

Starting salary is dependent upon the candidate’s education level, expertise in specific areas and experience. Increases in salary are dependent upon performance.

Work Environment

Standard office environment when doing administrative tasks; some work within museum / historic home environment. Must be able to lift 35 lbs. and be able to scale stairs. Other reasonable duties as requested or assigned.

Museum Hours
Sundays 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.
Wednesdays 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
February through November.
Closed major holidays.
